It was just about a year ago, when Folke Nikanor’s debut album ’Bottenviken’ was released and put him firmly on the Swedish music map. With piano-based instrumental music reminiscent of Jan Johansson, Lars Hollmer, Chilly Gonzales as well as Kraftwerk, his heart-warming melodies, with northern melancholy at heart, and his own direct expression with a tone that held a promise of a great future.
And now it is here - The Future! That is the sequel, ’Rymden enligt Folke Nikanor’ (Space According to Folke Nikanor), which takes an impressive leap forward, and where his innovative song structures has been enhanced with razor sharp songs and a glittering, electronic sound signed by producer Christian Gabel (1900, bob hund). The piano melodies are still here, but they are now just as often played on various synths and other instruments.
If the first album had traces of Scandinavian folk tunes, then the new album is more like Folke Nikanor making the film music to a sequel of ’The Escape from New York’, but now shot in Norrbotten. And as two big exclamation marks, there are also two song-based songs.
